All Drag Lines Lead to Aiken Performance Trials at Belle Meade

Last January, Aiken Hounds (SC) hosted a Hark Forward Drag Performance Trial in the beautiful Belle Meade Hunt (GA) country. Because of the inclement weather up here in New England last year, Wentworth and Green Mountain Hounds were present, but only able to field an oyster-eating team; the hounds remained hunkered down at home in sub-zero temperatures. Belle Meade Master Epp Wilson took us aside and asked what could be done to help New England participate fully.

Princess Anne Members Support After School Opportunities for Teens

Debbie and Doug Hackman, riding members of Princess Anne Hunt (VA), saw a need for teenagers in their community to have an after school venue offering constructive and positive opportunities. They started XZone, a 501c3 that focuses on arts, education, sports, tutoring, and mentoring. At its Annual Block Party event in September, the couple brought their mare, Freedom's Belle, to interest teenagers in learning to ride, and I spoke about the traditions of foxhunting.

Friends of Amwell Valley Hounds Join "Conversations in Conservation"

In September, Friends of Amwell Valley Hunt in New Jersey participated in an afternoon roundtable discussion, "Conversations in Conservation." Sponsored by the New Jersey Land Trust, the meeting brought together area horse groups to highlight close connections between equestrian activities and open space protection. Friends of Amwell Valley Hunt is a 501(c)(3) organization created to pursue the branding and preservation of the hunt's territory.

Join the Celebration Hunter Pace Series

The southeastern foxhunts Whiskey Road Fox Hounds (SC), Aiken Hounds (SC), Middleton Place Hounds (SC), Belle Meade Hunt (GA) and the Camden Hunt (SC) have created a Hunter Pace Series that spans from September 2, 2018, Labor Day weekend, to May of 2019. We are excited to share territory and have some fun with our fellow hunts. These paces are open to all riders from any discipline. Points will be accumulated from the six hunter paces for final awards, sponsored by Oak Manor Saddlery.

London Hunt Hosts the 64th Canadian Foxhound Show

The Masters and members of the London Hunt Club (ON) hosted this year’s foxhound show. All of the activities over Friday and Saturday were held at the beautiful London Hunt and Country Club, which was not only convenient but had all the facilities we needed on one site! Seven hunts, including London, Toronto and North York, Eglinton and Caledon, Ottawa Valley Hunt, Montreal Hunt, Hamilton Hunt, and Wellington Waterloo Hunt, participated with approximately 83 hounds (including the terrier classes) showing on the day. The judges arranged for this year were MFHA President Tony Leahy, MFH and huntsman of the Fox River Valley Hunt and Massbach Hounds, along with MFHA Executive Director and Keeper of the Studbook David Twiggs.

Biennial Seminar Highlights History and Hounds

The foxhunting community brings together people with different interests and experiences, and the 2018 Biennial Seminar offered something for all of us. Set in the historic neighborhood of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, and featuring public and private events at nearby Mount Vernon, the weekend's presentations, social events, and live conformation clinic educated and entertained attendees from across the continent. The events reaffirmed our sport's connection to the founding of the United States, and also looked ahead to meet the challenges of land and leadership into the future.
