Kimberton Hunt Club (PA) hosted the annual Penn-Marydel Hound Show on September 9, 2018 at its kennels in Chester Springs, PA. Ashley Hubbard, huntsman at Green Spring Valley Hounds (MD), served as judge for the upbeat day despite chilly and wet conditions. Hounds competed from Kimberton, Thornton Hill (VA), Longreen (TN), Cedar Knob (TN), Mells (TN), and Warwick Village (PA).

Hubbard was praised by participants for his diligence in judging and good humor given the rain and mud. He said, "A very enjoyable show despite the weather, although I was lucky that the organizers put up a tent for me to stand under to judge! I don't have much experience with Penn-Marydels, but I was impressed with the quality of the hounds. Everyone was so welcoming and I'd like to thank all the organizers of the show and the ring stewards for helping me through the day."

"There were definitely two types of hounds," Hubbard continued, "the heavy set with shorter legs and the rangier, lighter frame type, that my eye went for. Everyone showed their hounds well, and it was especially great to see some young handlers showing hounds. I really enjoyed the day, and it's always nice to see people's different hounds and meet new friends."

Friends of the Penn-Marydel is a thriving organization with the goal of promoting "our beloved Penn-Marydel Hound in a friendly, inviting atmosphere while adhering to our organizational by-laws." The evening before the show, the group sponsored a cocktail party and sumptious dinner for about 150 people at the beautiful home of ex-MFH Debbie McKechnie.

Elizabeth Opitz, MFH, Thornton Hill, reported, "We woke up Sunday morning to worsening conditions for day of show - we slip-slided around the ring - but we were not deterred. The competition was held at the home of Sandy Dunn, MFH of Kimberton Hunt, and his wife, Barbara."

Hounds from Kimberton, Cedar Knob, Longreen, and Thornton Hill vied for top ribbons in each class. Opitz added, "The day ended with the pack class, which was tough as hounds who were warm and dry in the trailer had to go outside in the cold rain and wind." Longreen ultimately triumphed for Master and huntsman Susan Walker, with Cedar Knob and Kimberton filling out the top three placings.

Opitz noted that the champion stallion hound, Cedar Knob Hero '17 (Addis's Wilbur '11 x Addis's Hershey '13) was bred by her father, Dr. Todd Addis, MFH of Warwick Village Hounds, with Rose Tree and Kimberton blood in his pedigree. Her overall champion also features Addis lines - Thornton Hill Bedlam '17 (Addis's Ringside '08 x Addis's Bittersweet '15).

Walker noted some connected bloodlines among the winning entries. In the male puppy class, four Longreen pups sired by Hero pinned at the top - Texas, Trumpet, Timber, and Ticket - the latter two having been drafted back to Cedar Knob. Longreen was particularly proud of their Rose Tree Kudos '14 (Longreen Zipper '07 x Longreen Future '12), winning Brood Bitch, Brood Bitch with Get with her Okra, placing fourth behind Okra in second in the Entered Bitch class, and winning the Performance Trial class and best of opposite sex overall.

Commenting that the show fell on her birthday, Walker said, "Those long-eared, long-legged hounds of Longreen have done it again! I couldn't have been a better birthday present. The fun part was winning the pack class with four pups age five months in the pack!"
